As cities change, who gets to stay, and who is displaced? Who decides? Today, we are living globally through an unprecedented and protracted crisis of housing that affects countries in the Global North and Global South alike. As cities have become engines of economic growth, real estate has become more attractive for investment and speculation, making housing more unaffordable and precarious. In this line of research, the UDL is interested in documenting and exploring the politics of housing and displacement, understanding how these processes unfold in New York and in places around the globe. We document broad patterns, as well the human experience of finding and losing places of meaning. We are also especially interested in alternatives, particularly people-driven, non-market alternatives like cooperatives, squats, and community land trusts. With active research, public programming, and publication, we continue to work with a number of community-based partners in exploring these issues and promoting alternatives.
