New Municipalism in the Post-COVID World

WHEN:
Tuesday, April 6, 2:30pm4:00pm

Within the last decade, many cities have witnessed the rise of New Municipalism initiatives in Europe, Latin America, and many parts of the world. The last few years, however, have set a much different tone, marked by the rise of Far Right forces and of course COVID-19 and its looming economic and social effects. For this discussion, panelists Laura Roth (activist and author), Federico Alagna (Universita di Bologna), and Lorena Zarate (Global Platform for the Right to the City) assess the relevance of New Municipalism as a political hypothesis in this changing landscape, by exploring municipalist responses to the COVID-19 crisis, and also discussing how Municipalism can approach crucial political issues underlying our current situation such as the tensions between urban, rural, suburban social realities; the challenges of climate change and its urban effects; or the increasing generational divides, among many others. Conveners: Vicente Rubio (UDL visiting scholar 2020-2021) and Sara Dima Abi Saab (UDL Doctoral Fellow 2020-2021)
